Lady Gaga's Tasteless Meat Bikini
Oh, Lady Gaga. I've just danced with you. I've had bad romances alongside you. I've watched you guest star on Gossip Girl and on Glee.
But recently, I've starting to seriously doubt your sanity. I thought Lady Gaga had really gone off the deep end with the recent interview with Vanity Fair, but now our Lady has taken things to a new level of Gaga.
I haven't been bothered by Lady Gaga's outlandish outfits in the past, but I gasped when I saw her posed on the September cover of Vogue Hommes Japan, doning pieces of raw meat strung together. She holds one slab up to her face. The title of the article beckons: "The Naked Truth."
What is the truth, Lady Gaga?
In 2009, Lady Gaga wore a coat made of plush Kermit the Frogs, and she stated: "I really loved this [outfit] . . . because I thought it was [a] commentary on not wearing fur, 'cause I hate fur and I don't wear fur."
So, she refuses to wear fur, but she will wear the entire carcass of a cow against her bare skin? It doesn't make sense.
PETA's President, Ingrid Newkirk, responded to the Vogue cover: "Oh, Lady Gaga's job is to do outlandish things, and this certainly qualifies as outlandish because meat is something you want to avoid putting on or in your body."
Following an America's Next Top Model episode that featured models wearing raw meat, PETA released a statement: "No matter how beautifully it is presented, flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal. Meat represents bloody violence and suffering, so if that's the look they were going for — they achieved it."
Perhaps some good will come of this, perhaps Lady Gaga was trying to use fashion to reveal truths about meat, perhaps it is another "commentary" that her publicist will find a way to spin in her favor. But mostly, I think it's a completely tasteless choice, and probably a sign that Gaga has become just another overexposed celebrity.
So listen up, Gaga: Real ladies don't wear fur, and we certainly don't wear raw meat.
