Latino Support for Marriage Equality

New York

The traditional media likes to make the case that people of color aren't down with same-sex marriage. Every time someone utters that sentiment, immediately discount it. Because it's a lie.

Case in point, two new polls out from Siena and SurveyUSA that looks at Latino support for marriage equality in New York state. And the findings don't support the talking point from opponents of same-sex marriage that Latinos, as a voting bloc, are against gay marriage.

According to Blabbeando:

Among registered voters in both polls, Latinos in New York State support marriage equality by an overwhelming margin.

The Siena poll puts Latino support at 57% to 31% (a difference of 26 percentage points) while the SurveyUSA poll puts it at 53% to 38% (a difference of 15 percentage points).

Busted.  Blanket statements that try to lump people of color as opposing same-sex marriage are dangerous, a little racist, and compeltely false.

One other cool thing about these two polls?  They also show that the majority of Upstate New Yorkers support marriage equality.
