Laura Bush Supports a Woman's Right to Choose

While the Democratic Party is biting its thumb at a woman's right to choose by backing anti-choice male politicians over pro-choice women, a well-known member of the Republican Party is speaking up for reproductive rights: Mrs. Laura Bush.

Yes, the wife of our former president George W. Bush thinks it's important that women retain control over their own bodies. In her words, during a Larry King interview about her new book, on Roe v. Wade: "I think it's important that it remain legal, because I think it's important for people, for medical reasons and other reasons." Maybe she could start pushing her position a little more in the GOP?

As Gay Rights blogger Michael A. Jones wrote last week, Laura Bush also came out in support of same-sex marriage, putting her not only progressive miles ahead of her husband, but also the current President of the United States, who has been a bit lethargic in repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell. "I think there are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman," Bush explains. "But I also know that, you know, when couples are committed to each other and love each other, that they ought to have I think the same sort of rights that everyone has." If only all conservative could see it the way she does: a matter of two people who love each other.

More encouraging words from Bush: "I think it's also a generational thing." In other words, Larry King interprets, it's coming. And since today is International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, it's nice to think that a step forward for equal rights is coming. And, I never thought I'd say this, but I might want to read Laura Bush's new book. Well played.
