a very long table covered with pamphlets and signs extends diagonally through the center of the photo; on the left side are young people looking at the pamphlets; on the right side are the people who are manning the tables--it is a college fair sort of thingIn Los Altos (CA), a college fair for students with learning and developmental disabilities was held. From the article it looks like at least 20 unique colleges and programs were represented, and post-secondary solutions from the typical disability resource centers to special programs that teach life skills concurrently with academics were discussed. Even options for students who were never mainstreamed academically were represented.

After talking with support people and doing a special training a few weeks ago about the woeful lack of infrastructure locally to support students on the spectrum as they transition from high school to college, this college fair thing really dinged into the "woah, useful" category.

Perhaps a Los Altos LD-focused college fair is an idea that could be carried over to other areas, organized by those of you out there who work in education, or who are active in your public high schools, or your local universities. Is this one of the ways that the large group of kids on the spectrum who are currently transitioning from high school can find post-secondary options that work for them--without the need to appeal to policy makers for more money?

(Side note: What about a LD-focused career fair for high school students?)
