LGBT and Conservative Baptist Seminary Reps to Meet
So it might not be like East Germany meeting with West Germany, or North Korea meeting with South Korea, or the Red Sox meeting with the Yankees, or Lindsay Lohan meeting with Sarah Palin, but nonetheless, a good dialogue is brewing between LGBT rights groups and members of the Southwestern Baptist Theology Seminary. On Monday, gay and lesbian activists will have a closed door meeting with representatives of the theology seminary, where each side will give a 25-minute presentation followed by dialogue.
While I'd be shocked if there's a conversion of the heart by the folks from Southwestern, the fact that this dialogue is taking place is good for both sides. The LGBT rights representatives will include folks from Soul Force, which is leading an Equality Ride to various Christian colleges throughout the United States. As part of the ride, Soul Force activists are seeking to spark dialogue between conservative religious leaders and LGBT people. They've had mixed success. Gay activists were arrested last week at a campus in Mississippi, which certainly puts a damper on the prospects for dialogue. It's nice to see Southwestern Baptist Theology Seminary not taking such a hard-line position.
Southwestern participants in Monday's meeting include two vice presidents, faculty and students.
