Sonia Sotomayor

It's official!  By a vote of 68-31, Judge Sonia Sotomayor becomes just the third woman - and first ever Latin@ - to be appointed to the United States Supreme Court.  And with that, some LGBT and progressive groups are offering their congratulations.  After all, at only 55 years old, Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor will certainly be tasked with ruling on a number of LGBT rights related cases that reach the nation's highest court in the coming years.

Here's the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force weighing in:

Some of the most important issues of our lifetime, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, will be considered by the nation's high court in the coming years. We are encouraged by Judge Sonia Sotomayor's record of fair-minded decisions, particularly in cases addressing the right to privacy.  As a Latina woman who rose up from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of the judicial ranks, she brings to the bench a keen appreciation and understanding of the struggles regularly faced by ordinary people.

And here's the Human Rights Campaign (sent via email):

We commend the Senate for swiftly confirming Judge Sotomayor.  Judge Sotomayor has proven that she is imminently qualified to sit on the United States Supreme Court. We are confident that she has demonstrated her understanding of the need for equality for all Americans. She is clearly committed to ensuring our Constitution lives up to its promise of equal justice for all.

It's a new day for the U.S. Supreme Court.  Sotomayor will be sworn in on Saturday.
