Local Eating Will Drive You Up the Wall — with a Vertical Garden
No food is more local than that which you grow yourself, especially when you grow it on the side of your house.
Taja Sevelle of Urban Farming recently described to me the benefits of "edible walls" -- walls that can support just about anything but a root vegetable. Urban Farming uses the wall systems made by Green Living Technologies.
While their systems look great, they might be a little much for the DIY local eater. Is that you? If so, check out these low-effort ideas.
- Make a garden out of a hanging shoe rack.
- Grow vegetables in reclaimed gutters.
- Build a wooden garden-box to mount vertically.
- Buy or make some of these "wall pockets" for growing plants.
- Invest in a vertical garden system from ELT Easy Green.
Green walls don't always have to be edible, though of course the food-bearing ones are of most concern to us here on Sustainable Food. But I would be remiss not to bring up the absolutely remarkable wall-garden work of Peter Blanc, whose growing murals are works of art.
