Love Erupts for Iceland's Prime Minister

JohannaFinally, love is in the air in Iceland. As opposed to, you know, ash.

If you've read this June 11th blog post (by the spectacular Michael Jones), you're probably aware that Iceland passed a unanimous vote to legalize gay marriage earlier this month. Well, here's another reason to love the little icicle of a country: Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir just married her longtime partner.

PM Sugarmama (that sounds close enough) married her partner Jonina Leosdottir on Sunday, June 27th, the same day that the same-sex marriage law came into effect. Leosdottir is a writer who has been in a registered partnership with SigourneyWeaverdottir (closer?) since 2002. While they previously had the same rights as heterosexual couples, their partnership has never been considered equal to a formal marriage.

Here's why this is so awesome: no one cares. There was no hoopla. There was no grand ceremony. The PM is 67 and probably thought it was damn time that she was able to marry the woman that she loves. All that she had to say was, "I have today taken advantage of this new legislation." And scene.

It should also be noted that Sugarbaker (I'm not even trying now) is the world's first openly gay head of state government. I know, I'm shocked too. I totally thought Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was a queen. But Iceland's PM has been in power since 2009 and it's never really been an issue in Iceland.

Another interesting point is that this civil partnership was able to be converted into a marriage without the need of filing a new license. No drama. No lawsuits. No Church interference. I love Iceland. If it weren't Iceland, I'd so move there.

Congrats on your nuptials, Prime Minister Sigurdardottir (that took a lot of effort). You are now my favorite Icelandic person ever. After Bjork. Her name is way easier.
