Make A Reese's Ad Asking for Fair Trade Chocolate
Advertisements for chocolate made with child and slave labor are everywhere. But one organization found a way to fight back and use Hershey's big advertising budget to advocate for the company to buy more Fair Trade cocoa. Will being targeted by their own ad campaign finally get Hershey to raise the bar and match their competitors in Fair Trade cocoa buying?
Hershey recently launched an online tool that allows you to make a "perfect" Reese's ad to send to your friends and family. But for the folks at Green America, the perfect ad is one which promotes Fair Trade chocolate. Hershey, despite the fact that most of its competitors have made a commitment to buy Fair Trade cocoa, still refuses to use Fair Trade cocoa in Reese's cups or any other candy. So Green America, working with the International Labor Rights Foundation, Global Exchange, and Oasis USA, is asking Fair Trade chocolate advocates to give Hershey a taste of their own bitter chocolate and make ads demanding Hershey support Fair Trade.
If you want to use Hershey's advertising budget to advocate for Fair Trade, here's how you can participate:
- Go to the Reese's "Perfect Ad Maker."
- Make an ad about why you love Fair Trade chocolate or why Hershey should make Reese's and other products with Fair Trade cocoa. Use your imagination. My ad says "You shouldn't have to choose between freedom and chocolate."
- Send your ad to fairtrade@greenamerica.org. They'll collect the ads and show Hershey that for many Reese's fans, a perfect ad is one that advocates Fair Trade chocolate.
If you still want to take action, you can write a letter to Hershey on Green America's website asking them to buy Fair Trade chocolate. Or you can sign the Change.org petition asking Hershey to raise the bar on their chocolate.
