Milk From Cloned Cows - For Real?
You have GOT to check this one out. CyClone Dairy - advertising milk from cloned cows. And I can't tell if it's for real or not. The website advertises milk ONLY from cloned cows. The pitch is that they find the most perfect cows, clone them, and thus use those cows to get only the most perfect milk. Ridiculous, right? Good material for The Onion. I looked high and low all over the page for a hint of snark. Nothing. Nada. But it was just TOO much to be for real. And there's no contact information.
Here's what I know. First off, it appears this is NOT a spoof being done by PETA. That was one of the first theories someone came up with. As it happens, my uncle is friends with somebody pretty high up in the organization, so he checked with her. Nope, it's not PETA. Second of all, the ads for this are being done by a large PR company called Edelman. And they've got MONEY. The ad they're running right now on the blog DailyKos.com costs $3,500 per week, and that wasn't their only ad buy - they've put ads on several blogs. I don't know the full extent of their ad campaign (partially because I don't own a TV) but I've contacted the PR firm to ask what's up.
In the meantime - what do you think? Reality imitating satire, or vice versa? All I can say is that I HAVE seen biotech PR sites that brag about how wonderful clones are in an effort to gain public acceptance. So if this does happen to be a joke, it's really not that far off from what the biotech industry WOULD actually do.
