Move Over, Harry and Louise

For many, the video image seared onto our brains from the Clinton health care fight of the 1990s was the “Harry and Louise” series of ads.  With a few 30-second spots, the Health Insurance Association of America managed to hit on all of the country’s fear points with regards to the Clinton plan and universal health care in general.  We don’t get know what will be the enduring video of this latest push to make health care a right for all Americans.  But if we’re lucky, it’ll be an R&B video that could well be to health care what Obama girl was to Obama.

I give you “Boyfriend with Health Benefits.”

Warning: The YouTube video has incredibly annoying ads at the bottom. Can't seem to get rid of 'em.

I know when I’m out of my depth.  There’s no way my prose can follow lines of poetry like, “My pre-existing condition is I’m in love with you,” or that driving, rhythmic chorus of “How much is your deductible?” at the end.

But I will say that although no-one in their right mind would say the Obama girl videos impacted the election, funny videos on YouTube do indicate that the issue of how dysfunctional are our health care system is can get traction beyond those activists who are already committed to reform.

Plus, not to put a fine point on it, the dance moves in this video are much better than Harry’s basketball moves.  Who says we haven’t made progress in the health care debate?
