MyCAA Program Reinstated for Existing Account Holders
Just a couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that the MyCAA, known to many people as the Military Spouses Tuition Assistance Program, had been suddenly, without much notice, suspended. This left many spouses of active duty service members enrolled for upcoming college terms panicking about how they were going to squeeze water from rocks in terms of finding those extra dollars in their budgets.
Change.org member Melissa Garza forwarded me an email from Tommy T. Thomas, the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense, dated March 13, the announcing that operations would resume for military spouses with existing accounts. This would allow all spouses with accounts to get their financial documents approved in time for classes (hopefully). The email doesn't specifically say whether the program is going to reopen for spouses to create new accounts, or if there are plans to do this in the future.
Notably, there is a sincere sounding apology on the part of the Undersecretary: sorry for the "extra burden and worry [spouses] experienced when [they] paused the program last month," recognizing that they failed to give adequate notice, and that they should have been more considerate when making such decisions.
I don't want to hurry to toot our own horns, folks here at Change, but the 71 signatures so far on the email petition to Robert Gates did not go unnoticed, and that is something for which I am appreciative. Even small ripples eventually have an effect in the breakers that reach the shores, and for many military spouses (though, not all, yet) that is a life changing matter.
Thanks to all who helped, and hopefully there will be more good news soon.
