New Brooklyn Restaurant Serves Cruel Foie Gras Donuts
Do or Dine, a new restaurant in Brooklyn, has added foie gras-filled donuts to their menu, and has thus quickly made it onto the map as the worst place for pastries. The restaurant plans to have the goose-liver donuts on its menu Wednesday through Saturday, charging a whopping $11 for each cruelty-filled donut.
One recent Do or Dine diner called the restaurant "heaven," but foie gras donuts mean a real-life hell for birds. Foie gras, which literally translates to "fatty liver," is produced by force-feeding waterfowl with pounds of grain and fat. This force-feeding process is known as "gavage," and it involves thrusting a metal feeding tube down the bird's throat several times a day.
The gavage process sometimes results in holes in a bird's sensitive neck, and the bird's engorged liver often becomes diseased. The birds are kept in filthy, crammed conditions while they wait to be force-fed.
Many New Yorkers are interested in sustainable eating, and foie gras supports factory farming. It's likely that Do or Dine's foie gras comes from Hudson Valley Foie Gras in New York, the largest foie gras farm in the country.
Animal rights organization Compassion Over Killing filmed an undercover video of Hudson Valley Foie Gras, revealing the horrific tortures that occur on the foie gras farm. The three-minute video is certainly not sugar-coated.
So what happened to good ol' fashioned jelly-filled donuts? There's no reason that birds should have to suffer for pastries, especially not in New York City, where BabyCakes bakery serves vegan donuts on the daily.
The New York Times Diner's Journal said that Do or Dine restaurant has an "uncommon lack of attitude," let's hope they don't have an uncommon lack of compassion as well. Sign the petition to ask Do or Dine to stop serving foie-gras filled donuts.
