NYC Ad: Slurping Soda = Drinking Fat

by Katherine Gustafson · 2009-12-19 06:00:00 UTC

I wrote yesterday about how high-fructose corn syrup has been found to alter body chemistry in ways that basically guarantee we'll get fat and ill if we consume a lot of it. It's more than just taking in too many calories; eating foods high in HFCS is basically like drinking fat.

I know that's not an image you really want in your head, but believe it or not, New York City Health Department has just gone there.

The city has been very proactive about tackling public health issues, from banning smoking to barring transfats from restaurant food. Now they are out to change people's behavior when it comes to drinking soda, maintaining that drinking fructose-heavy soft drinks amounts to "pouring on the pounds."

Check out the public service ad below and, once you finish retching, put in your two cents about whether you think this is an effective way to motivate people to choose something other than soda. I think the best part is when the guy winks at the end. It's a controversial campaign. What do you think?
