Obama Tells Americans to Feed Their Neighbors

by Greg Plotkin · 2009-11-26 09:00:00 UTC

(Hi Everyone, Greg here.  I just want to take this opportunity to wish you and yours a happy and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday.  Be thankful for time spent with family and friends, and please remember to think about those who aren't so fortunate.  All the best.)

In response to last week's annoucement that nearly 50 million people in the U.S. went hungry on a regular basis in 2008, The White House, USDA and Corporation for National and Community Service have joined forces to launch a new volunteer initiative called United We Serve: Feed A Neighbor.

With hunger spreading across America at levels unseen since the Great Depression, the Obama Administration is asking all Americans to pitch in to help feed the country's most food-deprived citizens.

Visitors to the United We Serve Web site are redirected to Serve.gov where there are a variety of volunteer opportunites  --  from delivering meals to the eldery to volunteering in a soup kitchen -- anyone can do to help those across the country suffering from food insecurity.

While you're enjoying your Thanksgiving meal this year, ask your family and friends what they are doing to help respond to the nation's most desperate food crisis in decades.  If they're looking to get involved, direct them to the Serve.gov Web site.

Never underestimate the power we all have to affect the life of someone in need.
