On Easter Weekend, Ask Donna Karan to Stop Using Bunny Fur

During Easter season, we're bombarded with pictures of adorable bunny rabbits. It's hard to believe that each year, one billion of these gentle long-eared animals are killed for their fur.

So as you plan your Easter outfit, try to make it a rabbit-friendly one. That DKNY pink chiffon dress you had your eye on? Don't buy it. Donna Karan continues to use rabbit fur in her designs, despite numerous campaigns asking her to cut the cruelty towards bunnies.

Easter is meant to be a time of peace and renewal, and so it's the perfect time to reconsider our treatment of the Easter Bunny and his friends. Much needs to change for rabbits, who suffer horrendous cruelty in fur farms. The animals spend their entire lives crammed into tiny cages, cages so small their soft spines can become deformed. They suffer horrific deaths, are gassed, electrocuted, poisoned, or strangled.

Many of Donna Karan's designs are sold at Nordstorm, a retailer that still hawks fur. In Defense of Animals (IDA) recently asked bunny-lovers to send an Easter card featuring rabbits to Nordstrom's president, requesting that he stop selling fur at the department store. You can find details of this campaign and Nordstrom's mailing address on the IDA website.

While you're at the post office, send a rabbit-themed card to DKNY Headquarters at 550 7th Ave. New York, New York 11018. But if you don't have extra money for postage, you can also send a free e-card to Donna Karan: this card of adorable bunny photos from 123Greetings should do the trick. You can reach Carole Kerner, DKNY's President, by e-mail at ckerner@dkintl.com and Mark Weber, the DKNY CEO, at mweber@dkintl.com.

It's fine if you eat the head off your chocolate rabbit, but the Easter holiday is the perfect time to start practicing compassion towards real rabbits. All bunnies deserve better than to end up as fur trim.
