Operation Save America Blames Legal Abortion for Terrorist Attacks
On 9/11, leaders of Operation Save America will hold a press conference in downtown Manhattan within blocks of Ground Zero. The press conference will be to let America know that 9/11, and other terrorist attacks on the country, are the result of legal abortion. It will be to tell us all that there will be more terrorist attacks if we do not take away women's right to control their own bodies, and that terrorism by Islamic extremists is the "horrific fruit" of our pro-choice ways. Oh, and they also throw in that homosexuality is at fault too, just as a sidebar.
Recently, the right-wing Operation Save America has been too busy attacking Muslim children as murderers to scream as much about baby-killers as it would like. This anti-Islam furor has been brought to a boil by the controversy over the planned construction of an Islamic community center a couple blocks from the site of the World Trade Center, in a former Burlington Coat Factory.
Obviously a press conference claiming to know that God smote the people who died on 9/11 because abortion is legal in this country is much more suitable for this hallowed ground than a multifaith project that promotes peace and understanding, and will provide such offensive items as a swimming pool, bookstores, and a large auditorium. But never fear: Operation Save America has time to perpetuate Islamophobia, misogyny, and homophobia by attacking them all simultaneously, and after 9/11 will be continuing to harass mosques countrywide while preaching the abomination of abortion, homosexuality, and false gods. Right Wing Watch points out that the Islamophobic attacks aren't exactly new fare for Operation Save America, but it has transitioned from a purely fringe ideology into more mainstream conservativism.
To blame any woman who has ever made the decision that having an abortion was the right thing to do, any person who has defended a woman's control over her own body, any loving couple of the same-sex for the tragedy of the 9/11 attacks is deeply offensive and disrespectful. Should any pro-choice or LGBTQ person who lost a loved one on 9/11 consider themselves culpable for that death because of their sexuality or respect for women? Please, Operation Save America, don't answer that.
Meanwhile, proponents of American principles of religious freedom and tolerance are holding a candlelight vigil in downtown Manhattan this evening to demonstrate a more positive message on this tragic anniversary.
