Over 1,000,000 to Repeal DOMA

Repeal DOMAFollowing up on their November 15 nationwide day of action for marriage equality, and their December 20 "Light Up the Night for Equality" campaign, Join the Impact is now the hub for a nationwide set of rallies being held on January 10, 2009 to call for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Ten days before PE Obama is set to take office, activists will gather in cities across the country to urge the new Administration and the new Congress to repeal the twelve-year-old ban. Organizers hope that more than 1,000,000 people will be out in the streets.

As the video below shows, over 1,000 people came out in California on November 5 on less than one day's notice to show public support for LGBT rights and same-sex marriage. By November 7, that number had swelled to 10,000 people for a public rally in San Francisco alone. By November 15, 100,000 people across the country were standing up to support marriage equality. So the goal of 1,000,000 isn't so hard to imagine.

Check out the video below, and then check out Join the Impact to find a rally near you. Also, be sure to visit the Change.org Ideas Section, where you can vote on the Idea to "Repeal DOMA". The issues that get the top votes will be formally submitted to the Obama Administration on January 20.
