Pacelle and HSUS "Set the Record Straight"

No, they're not responding to any of the criticisms I made in my series of posts regarding the Oprah program on animal welfare and Proposition 2 (wouldn't that have been something, though?). They're doing their best to counter, and reveal the duplicity in, the arguments of their real opponents in this battle: the agribusiness industry groups fighting the proposition.

For these agribusiness companies to say they are safe food advocates is like tobacco companies saying they are healthy lung advocates. It's a scam, and the public needs to see through the charade.

Read (and watch) more: 30 Seconds to Set the Record Straight. You can sign the pledge, created by a Change.org member, to vote or support Prop 2 here (but while doing so, don't let yourself forget what the proposition will not do—don't let yourself think that if Prop 2 passes, the work is done, or the animals will suddenly be happy or treated humanely; vote yes, but be realistic about what passage of Prop 2 will actually achieve).

Yes, I have serious concerns about the prop and about its sponsor's strategies, some of which I've already voiced in the Oprah posts and elsewhere—remember my reaction to the dancing pig video? (And Wayne, buddy, quit saying this is going to "stop" animal cruelty; you know it's not!) But I am a critic of HSUS, not an outright enemy, and I don't oppose Prop 2 in the sense that I would encourage a " no" vote now that it's already on the ballot, flaws, misleading promotion, and all. More to come soon on Prop 2, the good and the bad, with the vote coming up in just a couple weeks.
