Party Tonight! Get Your Sustainable Drink On!

I know you've already resolved to get more keyed in to sustainable food in 2010, but if you can't wait until tomorrow to get started on your new way of living, check out your local wineries, breweries and distilleries to stock up for your New Year's party tonight. This will get you right with the local-food gods and allow you to be guilt-free as you go out and live it up.

If you're not into local, there's always organic, which is a category that has exploded lately in the world of beer and wine, and actually you'll find that the two overlap a lot. Organic beer, you say? Since beer is made of grain, it can be as full of pesticides and other nastiness as the grains that make it. Organic wine is also on the rise, so much so that there's an entire online journal dedicated to the subject. Get a clue which wines and beers to pursue from Grist.

There are also organic spirits to be had and companies dedicated to selling them. And you can get ahold of many organic and local juices to mix them or chase them. If you're really feeling ambitious, you can make your own tonic or squeeze your own orange juice, though it's probably better for the earth to buy frozen juice from concentrate than import a bushel of fresh oranges to eke the juice out of.

Regardless of what you drink, have a happy new year! See you in 2010!
