PETA's Worst Dressed Misses Fashion Week Failures

PETA's annual Worst Dressed list came out just in time for New York's Fashion Week. As Stephanie Feldstein already mentioned, there's a resurgence of fur on the catwalk this year. (Aren't these fox fur shoes the cruelest — and ugliest — creations you've ever seen?)

The front rows at fashion week are always lined with the hottest stars of the moment, often featuring fur lovers Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Victoria Beckham, and Nicole Richie. So which one of these furry outfitted super stars won PETA's Worst Dressed distinction?

None of them. Catherine Zeta-Jones was given the honor. Also on the list were Jessica Simpson, Kate Hudson, and Jennifer Lopez. This is a great list... if it were 2002. That was the year when Chicago came out, when Newlyweds was a big hit on MTV, when Hudson was on the cover of the September issue of Vogue, and Jennifer Lopez was dating Ben Affleck.

But these stars aren't fashion idols anymore. Does anyone aspire to look like Jill Zarin (who?) or Aretha Franklin? There are bigger fashionable fish to fry. PETA did get it right by deciding to include Rihanna in the list. She could have absolute megawatt style, but she's too often found in fur.

Better choices for Worst Dressed 2010 would be any of these animal-skin-sporting fashion mavens: Nicole Richie, the Olsen twins, Lindsay Lohan, Heidi Klum, Sienna Miller, Chloe Sevigny, Keira Knightly, Jessica Alba, Rachel Zoe, Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham, and even newcomer pop star Ke$ha. These are celebrities who inform what goes on in the fashion industry today, and yet they all wear fur. If even one of these ladies came out against wearing animal skins, it would be a big step in the compassionate direction for fashion.

PETA has included some of these women in the past, such as Lindsay Lohan and the Olsen twins. But when Mary-Kate Olsen shows up at fashion week wrapped in a black fur bathrobe cinched by a leather belt, electric blue crocodile clutch in hand, how can you deny her rightful place as Worst Dressed? She's certainly got my vote.
