Trust me, I'd much rather be sleeping right now than asking you to sign another petition to your Senators. But the situation for the education outlays in the stimulus package is getting worse by the day. Read on, and please don't only sign the petition - spread it. Facebook, Twitter, email, the whole nine yards. It's this week, or bust.

Save Our Schools protest

The AP reports on Saturday, 7 Feb. 2009, that Republican senators propose "cuts of $60 billion from money Democrats want to send to the states. That money is targeted to avoid budget cuts for schools as well as law enforcement and other programs."

Greg Sergeant reported on a GOP memo circulating in the Senate that identifies proposed cuts in "Head Start, Education for the Disadvantaged, School improvement, Child Nutrition, Firefighters," and other investments.

Even if the Senate approves the proposal this weekend, there's still time to save the education funds. From the AP:

"Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan told reporters he and others hoped that some of the funds on the chopping block would be restored next week when negotiations open on a House-Senate compromise."

State budgets can't keep schools afloat in the current meltdown. Encourage your Senator to support the stimulus aid to education. It will keep people in jobs, create more, and improve the conditions for the neediest students to learn in school. Despite announcements that the Senate has reached agreement on the stimulus package, and will probably vote on it this weekend, Sen. Levin says negotiations over some of the eliminated provisions will continue into next week. So by all means, if you want to save additional funding for Head Start, IDEA, School Renovation, and Child Nutrition from the GOP axe, now's the time to contact your senator and President Obama.

Take 30 seconds to tell your Senator to support education. Sign the petition here.
