Pink is the New LGBT Activism

Pink Dot Singapore

We've all heard that pink is the new black, right?  Well, maybe pink is the new sign of fighting homophobia around the world.  Case in point, Singapore.

Given the complete disregard for basic human rights on display in Russia this morning, it's great to see an international LGBT rights demonstration go off without any state-sponsored violent crackdowns.  In Singapore today, hundreds of activists came out in the streets wearing pink, and calling for an end to global homophobia.

The event wasn't a protest or a parade, rather a call for ordinary Singaporeans - LGBT or straight - to come together to promote diversity and equality.  One of the organizers told AFP:

This is all about inclusiveness, for diversity and for everyone to come together.  It's about supporting the freedom to love for everyone regardless of your sexual orientation... so people who support that, whether you are straight or gay, they are all here right now.

Singaporean law still has a statute that prohibits sex between two men.  It's a relic from British colonialism, but like other anti-sodomy statutes around the world (hello, India!), it still remains on the books.
