Pope Calls Gay Marriage Attack on Creation

Pope BenedictLast week Portugal's parliament moved to recognize same-sex marriage. This week, Pope Benedict XVI is accusing the country of launching a war on creation.

The Pope, never one to keep his roar quiet on the issue of same-sex marriage, issued a screed over the weekend targeting the viral spread of same-sex marriage throughout the globe. From Portugal to Mexico City, the Pope has watched over the past month as same-sex marriage continues to gain ground in Catholic strongholds. That makes for a grumpy Pope.

"One such attack comes from laws or proposals which, in the name of fighting discrimination, strike at the biological basis of the difference between the sexes," Pope Benedict XVI said.

The Pope's comments are yet the latest attempt by the Church to reframe the "marriage is only for pro-creation" meme. That meme has long been discredited (after all, where does it leave couples who can't have children, or senior citizens who decide to get married?), but that won't stop the Pope from tossing rhetorical grenades at the expense of gays and lesbians.

Truthfully, if the Pope is looking for a threat to creation, he ought to just go look in the mirror. Or maybe take Gandhi's words to heart that, "Intolerance is itself a form of violence."

Sorry, Pope, but you're the one doing the attacking here.
