Pro-Choice Support For Carhart Clinic Prevails In Omaha
Good news everyone - the counter protest against the anti-choice group, Operation Rescue, succeeded last Friday with a 2-1 ratio of pro-choice vs. anti-choice activists at the event in Omaha, Nebraska.
Omaha World Herald reported on the event, saying the following:
Supporters of Dr. LeRoy Carhart's abortion clinic outnumbered opponents during a nearly five-hour protest today in Bellevue.
About 50 anti-abortion demonstrators prayed at the south side of the clinic. Some were repeating the Hail Mary and Our Father. Some knelt on the ground. Many held rosaries.
About 100 supporters of abortion rights gathered in front of the clinic, many well ahead of the 8 a.m. demonstration start by anti-abortion groups.
By 1 p.m. most of the abortion protesters were gone. About that time, pro-choice advocates began to depart, too. An hour later, just about 20 of the pro-choice advocates remained.
Both sides had promised a peaceful demonstration. And that's what it was.
I'm very glad to hear that the demonstration was peaceful and that pro-choice activists outnumbered the anti-choice protesters, which accurately represents how citizens in the United States actually feel about abortion. As stated in a July 2009 Gallup poll, 57% of U.S. citizens believe abortion should be legal under certain circumstances and 21% believe that it should be legal under any circumstances. The results of this poll and this protest continue to indicate that pro-choice is the upward trend in the United States and women are finally being seen as trust worthy decision makers when it comes to this issue.
