Ready to Fight Boehner’s Anti-Choice Agenda

Today, John Boehner was sworn in as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the most powerful anti-choice politician in the country.

Boehner pledged to Americans United for Life – an extremist anti-choice group – that he would be “the most pro-life Speaker ever.”

I’ve seen my fair share of anti-choice politicians hell-bent on taking away a woman’s right to choose – but Boehner takes the cake.  In the 20 years we’ve tracked John Boehner, he has voted against choice 142 times – that includes votes on sex education or birth control.

John Boehner and his anti-choice cronies have already started pushing a dangerous, anti-choice agenda that includes:

  • Repealing the health-reform law and denying millions of women access to birth control and prenatal care.  The House is set to vote on a repeal on January 12.
  • Threatening women’s abortion coverage. Boehner also scheduled a vote on a resolution proposing a dozen major changes to the new health-care law, which could include a Stupak-like ban on abortion coverage.
  • Pushing the new “Stupak on Steroids” bill, which is even worse than the original Stupak ban in health reform. It effectively would ban coverage of abortion in the new health-care system and impose tax penalties on millions of American families whose private insurance plans include abortion coverage.
  • Cutting funding for family-planning programs that provide women access to basic health care, such as birth control and cancer screenings.

Boehner has wasted no time in gathering some extreme, anti-choice allies to bolster his agenda – his staff even sat down with anti-abortion extremist Randall Terry, a man who called for the execution of abortion providers.  And with 246 anti-choice members of the House willing to do his bidding, we knew Boehner’s attacks would come fast and furious.

Boehner thinks he has free rein to push his anti-choice agenda on America. But he’s forgetting the pro-choice community is ready to challenge him at every turn. That’s why I need pro-choice Americans to join me by standing up to Boehner today.

Show Boehner you’re ready to counter his attacks from day one.  As he takes his oath today, take the oath to defend choice.
