Real Food Challenge is a student-led organization that brings youth interested in issues of sustainable food together to learn, discuss and take action.

The 2nd annual Real Food Summits will take place in five regions of the US next month. With names like "Strengthening the Roots: Food and Justice Convergence" (California), "Northwest Real Food Convergence: Cross-Pollinating Ideas & Action" (Northwest) and "Real Food Through a Wider Lens" (Midwest), these are sure to be eye-opening events for the young people involved.

The idea, according to an email release, is to get young leaders engaged in "working to bring more sustainable, socially just, and community-based food onto their campuses and into their communities." Well, let's hear it for that!

The group organizes itself by category (local/community-based, fair, ecologically sound and humane) and region (Northeast, West Coast, Southeast, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, Northwest and Southwest). The members of the organization's network share ideas, information and resources, explore possibilities for action, and attend trainings, conferences and events like the Real Food Summits.

No one is more important to the future of food in this country than those who will actually produce it and eat it in the future, so the news that young leaders are starting to engage with this issue is enough to brighten my entire week. Keep up the good work, students!
