Remembering Srebrenica

"My relative said that the guy who was behind the machine gun on an armoured personnel carrier was the bus conductor on a bus we took to school every day."
-- Emir Suljagic, Srebrenica survivor
Today marks the 14th anniversary of the massacre of Bosnian Muslims at Srebrenica. A mass funeral was held in Srebrenica this morning for 534 victims recently recovered from a mass grave, as they were laid to rest alongside 3,297 others at a memorial center.
The massacre claimed the lives of an estimated 8,100 Muslim men and boys in 1995. According to the AP:
"Every year, more victims' bodies are recovered from mass graves found in the area, identified through DNA analysis and buried. This year among the 534 victims, there are 44 teenagers. Four were 14 when they were killed."
Amila Bosnae laments the lack of justice for the massacre on her blog, noting:
"A couple of years ago the Dutch government awarded medals to the soldiers who had been in Srebrenica during the genocide. Is having part in a holocaust really something to be proud of?"
