Rightwing Colorado Legislators, LGBT Rights, and HIV

Schultheis

Earlier this week, conservative Colorado State Senator Scott Renfroe compared homosexuality to murder, and suggested that the Bible clearly spelled out that women were supposed to be the "helpers" of men.  Today, another Colorado politician has stuck their foot in their mouth with some of the most outrageous comments we've seen so far this year.  Is there something in the water in Colorado that's making right-wing politicians senile?

State Sen. Dave Schultheis actually voted against a bill requiring pregnant women to be tested for HIV because, he said, it would inappropriately protect women from the consequences of "sexual promiscuity." If Keith Olbermann is reading this blog (a boy can dream!), we certainly hope he names Schultheis the worst person of the day, if not the entire freakin' year.  Schultheis actually said he hoped babies would contract HIV from their mother, so that the whole family could "see the negative consequences of...promiscuity."

Disgusting.  As fellow Colorado State Senator Lois Tochtrop pointed out to the Denver Post - in an effort to provide some reason to Schultheis' craziness - if caught early enough, the spread of HIV from mother to baby can be prevented.  That's what Schultheis is railing against.  And that not only makes him a bad politician, it also makes him pretty cruel and heartless.
