Sally Kern: Gays Want "Equality and Freedom," and Must Be Stopped
Sally Kern has a reputation for outlandish homophobic statements.
The Oklahoma State Representative earned national infamy in 2008 by claiming gay people are worse than terrorists. "I honestly think [homosexuality is] the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam — which I think is a big threat, okay?" the fiercely conservative Kern insisted. "This stuff is deadly, and it's spreading, and it will destroy our young people, it will destroy this nation."
Kern's latest comments carry the same tune, yes, but her message gets lost amidst the politically convoluted background noise of her own creation. "[There is] a group of homosexual millions who for years have been working secretly to change the society of America — the political side of America — so that there will be freedom and equality for everyone," Kern warned at the "Wake Up, America!" conference earlier this month.
Translation: gay people must be stopped because they're trying to spread two of the United States' ultimate ideals: freedom and equality. Wait, don't terrorists have to be stopped because they're trying to destroy freedom and equality? I'm confused, and Kern is, too.
I wonder how this will play in her reelection campaign ...
One can't truly be surprised by Kern's outburst. This is, after all, a person who once claimed that "immorality" brought down the economy. "Our economic woes are consequences of our greater national moral crisis," she and other Oklahoma lawmakers declared last year. "This nation has become a world leader in promoting abortion, pornography, same-sex marriage, sex trafficking, divorce, illegitimate births, child abuse, and many other forms of debauchery." Kern's no doubt flabbergasted that a transgender Democrat, Brittany Novotny, has chosen to run against her.
Clearly one can't truly be offended by her hyperbole and histrionics. They're part of Kern's charm. It is astonishing, however, how much of her politics she's willing to sacrifice simply to stop the homosexual scourge.
Kern's knee-jerk reactions to two political matters, terrorism and equality, have clearly come into conflict. She wants to "protect" the nation from both, but clearly feels the gays are a more pressing concern, and deserve more disdain than bin Laden and company.
Rather than protecting the constitution from terrorists, she's willing to dismantle our nation's founding document all for the sake of "morality." One wrong apparently does make a right. In Kern's twisted America, at least.
In last year's proclamation on the economy, Kern quoted John Adams and asserted, "Our Constitution was made only for a Moral and Religious people." Clearly we gays don't fit into Kern's definition of "moral." And that's the trouble with blending subjective, religious-based morality with a document as powerful as the Constitution: someone always gets left out.
My advice to Kern: target terrorism, not our Constitution, because you're currently walking a fine line between patriot and traitor.
