Save Money and Choose Fair Trade

We all know it. It's true. Times are tough right now, especially on our wallets. I mean, I just got a money tree at an estate sale in hopes that it will, well, bring some green. I know money doesn't grow on trees, but let's see if the money tree can pull a Jerry Maguire. Being a socially conscious consumer, I really do watch what I'm spending my money on. Being a struggling young adult living in an expensive city, I also do my best to watch how much money I'm spending.

Now, everyone is always saying to me, "Well, I'd love to buy Fair Trade products, but it's so much more expensive". Not the case my friends. The Fair Trade Federation just came out with a handy list outlining how buying Fair Trade products can save you money. Yes, buying Fair Trade products can help save you money. Some examples:

One pound of fair trade coffee makes 30 cups for $10-$12 or spend $54 for the equivalent 30 cups at a coffee chain.

Change to fair trade cane sugar from Equator Coffee for $3.99/pound instead of paying $4.49/pound for unfairly traded raw sugar.

Send an eco-friendly greeting card for $3.99 from Hope for Women or spend $4-$5 on a conventional card from a drugstore.

Get out and about with a fair trade rugby ball for $14.99 from Fair Trade Sports or take a friend to the movies for $20 (plus popcorn!)

Painfully true about the movies. A lot more pleasant to be outside anyhow. So there you have it. You can shop with your values aaand save money. Sounds like the perfect combination.
