Sen. Blanche Lincoln Becomes Chair of Agriculture Committee

Good news - Sen. Blanche Lincoln will succeed Sen. Harkin as chair of the Agriculture Committee.

She's the first woman to hold this Committee post. Sen. Lincoln gave a brief, but passionate speech today at a Democratic Caucus press conference this afternoon, which included the following words:

Thank you, Mr. Leader -- a special thanks to you for the leadership you've provided us in all of these movements that we make. And I think it's so fitting -- I'm looking straight ahead. The
first portrait of a woman ever to be hung in the United States Capitol is Hattie Caraway -- Senator Hattie Caraway from Arkansas -- and I am so proud and privileged to be here today and to assume the role as chairman of the Senate Ag Committee.

As Senator Harkin mentioned, as the first woman as well as the first Arkansan, I come from a seventh-generation Arkansas farm family and I know my dad, who was a rice farmer in the Arkansas delta is looking down and smiling on me today.

Good luck to her on directing this powerful committee. I (literally) hope she is able to sows the seeds of the future in this role!
