"Social Enterprise" a 2008 Top Buzzword

Lucy over at Philanthropy 2173 has been counting down some of the buzzwords of the year. For her, designating something a "buzzword" isn't an attack on it or a suggestion that the term is meaningless, its a recognition of a concept that is clearly accelerating in the public and professional discourse.

You may not be surprised that "Social Enterprise" makes the list. There were a number of forces she believed pushing the idea into a more prominent space this year - including the ongoing efforts of foundations like Skoll and Omidyar, convenings like the Social Capital Markets event, and the increase of "social enterprise" programs at business school. Indeed, she suggests that with the financial crash, this process is only going to accelerate, putting social enterprise in the "near universal business jargon" category.

It's a great column, and worth a full read. The links out are particularly good for those of you just beginning to wrap your head around concept.
