Sudan365: A Global Call For Peace

Update: The Sudan365 website is now live.

The coming year is critical if Sudan is to avert a return to large-scale civil war, and effective, coordinated international action is necessary to help steer the country away from impending crisis.

Last year saw the most violence in South Sudan since the end of the North-South Civil War in 2005; the 22-year war killed 2 million people before finally coming to a close with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), which created a transitional government and set criteria for a democratic transformation of the country (many of which were never implemented) and gave southerners an option to vote for self-determination in 2011. Recently, however, the CPA has shown signs of being on the brink of collapse -- coupled with the unresolved conflict in Darfur, Sudan lends itself to a number of doomsday scenarios if prompt action is not taken to prevent further escalation of violence.

This Saturday, January 9 marks the five year anniversary of the signing of the CPA, and an impressive and broad global coalition of advocacy groups are using the opportunity to launch Sudan365, a world-wide campaign for peace and civilian protection throughout all of Sudan. Events are planned in numerous cities across the globe, from Cape Town to Calgary, and a film featuring a number of famous drummers will be released on Saturday on the front page of YouTube.

The event is already gaining momentum in the press, with articles in The Guardian and Telegraph, and hopefully more is to come. For events scheduled in the US, visit Save Darfur and the Sudan365 Facebook page.
