SXSW, Startup Visa and More Weekend Entrepreneur Links
This weekend, it seems like half of the people I know are headed to South By Southwest -- a top film, music and interactive media conference -- in Austin, Texas. That's a reflection of a couple things. First, that I live and work in a pretty small barrel. Second, and more importantly, there is a growing conversation between the web startup and traditional venture world and the social enterprise space. Ponder that as you enjoy these weekend reads:
Check-In For Charity During SXSW With CauseWorld And TechCrunch - I wrote about CauseWorld earlier this week, a Foursquare-like geolocation application that allows you to check into retail venues, accumulate points (or "karmas") and then trade those karmas in for donations to nonprofits. The application has been updated with even more ways to share your activity and collect Karmas. For SXSW, they've specifically partnered with TechCrunch to open some new check-in charity opportunities for conference-goers.
A Survey Of Social Entrepreneurs 2010 plans - The folks at CommonGood Careers surveyed a large number of social entrepreneurs and found that many of them view 2010 as an inflection point. This post summarizes some of the findings. Notable to me: about 75% of those participating in the survey planned on expanding activities this year, in spite of the financial pressure of the recession.
This Month's Book Club Pick: The Road From Ruin Charts the Path to Capitalism 2.0: Arianna Huffington choses this new book by the Philanthrocapitalism authors as the book of the month. The basic premise of the book is that we're losing a major opportunity to fundamentally restructure our economy in the way of the financial collapse. The weight carries the authority of Matthew Bishop, the New York Bureau Chief of the Economist.
Visas For Foreign Entrepreneurs: BusinessWeek picks up the conversation about the so-called Startup Visa that has been circulating on this blog and around the web. Apparently this piece appeared both in the online and in the print edition of the magazine. This is clearly an issue with some legs. If you missed the chance before, please take a moment to read our past coverage of the Startup Visa Act and sign Change.org's petition supporting it below.
