Talking About Dreams with Charles Kuck
I chatted with AILA President Charles Kuck about the Dream Act this morning on his weekly "Immigration Hour" radio show broadcast from Sandy Springs, Georgia. Chuck certainly knows his stuff and can speak knowledgeably on a wide range of immigration topics. He also has possibly more energy than any other human being I've ever encountered. Here's the clip (about :15 to :25 or so), though your efforts to surf other pages while listening may be unsuccessful, as mine were.
Also, Chuck is right, my numbers were off. The 65,000 kids who stand to benefit from the Act is the number of eligible undocumented students graduating from high school each year. The total number of potential beneficiaries is much higher.
Also, I'm with Chuck 90% of the way, but I respectfully differ with his point that Dream can't pass on its own. I think that view underestimates the passion and potential the Dreamers themselves bring to the table. No one thought a relatively small group of motivated restrictionists could shut down both major parties and the president on a bill he badly wanted to pass, but they did it two years in a row. In the process, they changed the default position of the mainstream GOP on immigration from lukewarm indifference to fiery restrictionism.
All I can say is, watch out for the Dreamers!
