The human rights --- and in particular, the anti-genocide --- community suffered a significant loss in the plane crash in upstate New York. Among those on board was Alison Des Forges, a chief investigator into the Rwandan genocide and the author of Human Rights Watch's seminal publication, Leave None to Tell the Story: Genocide in Rwanda (...and a personal hero of mine). Ms. Des Forges provided expert testimony to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, as well as several national courts, in the aftermath of the genocide.

Sincere condolences to Ms. Des Forges' family, friends, and colleagues --- and to the rest of the world, for the loss of such an intelligent and committed human rights advocate.
