$80,000. $47,000. $90,000, $79,000, $50,000, $20,000, and some other numbers going up to six figure: You'll find these (definitely not at all small) figures mentioned in reference to private schools for students with disabilities in New Jersey in today's Star-Ledger. An article notes that, in 2008, New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine "would include $15 million in his state budget to provide further incentive for in-district programs for autistic children."

Reasons for the private schools' costs: 1:1 teacher-to-student ratio; salaries for the director, principal, administrators, and secretary; competitive salaries for teachers; supplies (i.e., all that stuff). Aside from rent, one cost that in-district programs don't have is transportation, which cab $10,000 - $20,000 per year.

But public school programs have their limitations.

We hope that educational decisions are based on the basis of what is best and most appropriate for a child's education. We fear, that's not always---too often not---the case.
