The Future -- Now in Stock at a Store Near You

by Emily Gertz · 2009-03-24 17:55:00 UTC

My friend and fellow former Worldchanger Jamais Cascio went to Costco recently, and look at what he saw: a stack of green revolution, on sale for less than the cost of an Amazon Kindle:Solar Power Kits for sale at Costco

Folks, this is what the mainstreaming of sustainability looks like: a kit that almost anyone can use to install some solar power generation at home, distributed via the consumer economy's existing channels to a big box store near you. (Kits like these have been on sale in China for years.)

It's not as exciting as trying to get arrested, perhaps. But arguably it's going to lower demand for dirty energy more effectively than mixing it up with the cops in front of a coal plant.

As Jamais writes, "The future isn't here. The future was here awhile ago, ate all your donuts, and took off to get some beer."
