The Great Whole Foods Cheese-and-Apple-Pie Adventure

All the hype you've heard about Daiya vegan cheese? It is all true. I took a field trip last night with my friends Yvonne the Traveling Vegetarian, Deb of Invisible Voices, and Eric of the I'm Vegan documentary and a new Australian friend, Cameron, to a Whole Foods near the conference hotel for the purpose of getting one of their vegan pizzas made with Daiya cheese. And we might as well have been kids in a candy store. Vegan signs over an all-vegan dessert case! Vegan specialty sandwiches! Two kinds of vegan pizza! And oh, the pizza did not disappoint. Nor did the remarkably inexpensive vegan apple pie we bought. We may have been a sight gleefully reentering the hotel hauling a case of beer and an apple pie while drooling at the pizza box Deb was carrying, a box that was almost as long as she was tall, but we enjoyed ourselves.

When I tried to get a photo of our glorious vegan cheese and spinach-mushroom-cheese pizzas, I discovered that my camera batteries had died out, so I won't have photos for you until my pals get back to their respective cities and send me some, but believe me--there's a reason this stuff has taken the vegan foodie blogosphere by storm. Not only does this cheese melt and stretch like dairy cheese and taste awesome, but additionally, with such innovative ingredients as cassava and arrowroot flours and pea protein, it also is soy-free. Yes, really.

It's not easy to come by in stores yet (hence the fact that only one of us--residents of various cities and regions--had already tried it), but hopefully, that will change in time. In the meantime, if you're willing to shell out some cash to try it out (you'll have to buy a cold pack and select pretty quick shipping), you can order it from Pangea.
