The Little Dog That Could

By the time Fred Krause saw the elderly shih tzu lying in the train tracks in Midvale, Utah, it was too late to stop the train. Miraculously, the Utah Railway Company train passed over the little dog without injuring him.
When the train returned town, the dog was still hanging out on the tracks. Krause was able to slow down, but the dog couldn't outrun the train, and this time he wasn't as lucky. The snowplow on the front of the train struck him.
Krause returned to the scene after his shift and found the dog lying on the tracks, dazed but alive. "My heart went out to the little guy ... The last thing I expected was to find him alive."
The shih tzu had apparently been on the lam for awhile; he had matted fur and infections in his feet and eyes. His encounter with the train also left him with a concussion. The dog-with-nine-lives is recovering from all this trauma with Krause, his wife Lori, and Milo, their resident shih tzu. Milo isn't too happy about the invalid sharing his home, but it's only temporary; Fred and Lori plan to find the stray his forever home once he's healed.
"It was a good thing Fred had clocked him in the head with a train," said Lori. The Midvale area was covered with snow not long after the rescue. Considering his condition before facing off with the train, and the fox population in the area, the little old dog probably wouldn't have survived much longer on his own. Who would have guessed that getting hit by a train could be a life-saving experience?
