The Paycheck Fairness Act Shows Signs of Life
Last December, I told you about the slow death of the Paycheck Fairness Act, legislation created to address gender pay inequity. Remember, we still haven't achieved equal pay for equal work: American women make only 77 cents for every dollar that their male counterparts earn. The Paycheck Fairness Act is designed to prevent wage discrimination based on sex that gips women out of their just earnings.
Yet even though the House of Representatives passed the bill over a year ago, the Senate version has been languishing in committee ever since. Signs pointed to the bill as lying on death's door.
Now, unexpectedly, the bill is showing signs of life. The Senate just announced that it will be scheduling a hearing on the Paycheck Fairness Act some time in the next few months. This may sound like a small step, but it is crucial towards achieving our ultimate goal of getting this legislation passed.
The last time I told you about the Paycheck Fairness Act, I asked you to please tell your Senator that you want them to throw their support behind it. I ask the same thing of you this time. The Paycheck Fairness Act needs mouth-to-mouth, and you can help provide it. Let's build on the little momentum that we have and make sure that it carries us all the way until the legislation is passed. Tell your Senator now that you expect them to do everything they can to bring the Paycheck Fairness Act up for a vote!
