The Pinnacle Campaign Re-Models the Fight Against Fur
I don't spend much time missing 1994. Women were wearing crop tops to show off their glittery bellybutton rings, the New York Times called Forrest Gump "a fashion icon" and Ace of Base had three of the year's top ten hit songs.
But 1994 was also the year that the Cindy Crawford appeared on the cover of New York magazine wearing a "No Fur" pin on her hat. The cover of the magazine asks: "Does the fur industry stand a chance against PETA's army of naked celebrities?" The magazine was referring to PETA's "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" campaign, which was just budding at the time.
Unfortunately, the fur industry survived the 90's and has even thrived since. PETA has lost many of its original army: former anti-fur supermodels Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Elle Macpherson, and Naomi Campbell have all reneged on their promise to animals. It's time to bring back some of that 1994 anti-fur enthusiasm, which is why the Pinnacle campaign was hatched.
Joshua Katcher of The Discerning Brute launched the campaign to bring together animal-loving models, artists, and designers to create a wide-reaching anti-fur message. The basic idea behind the Pinnacle campaign is a re-invention of that iconic anti-fur pin that Cindy Crawford once wore.
The anti-fur statement doesn't even have to be a pin, it can be any accessory that makes a clear statement against fur. The Pinnacle campaign will feature all the designs on the website, becoming the "radix for a potent and fashionable stand against the dark forces of the fur industry."
Vegan models Karolina Babczynska and Adam Wallace have signed on as spokesmodels for the anti-fur campaign. Pinnacle has received support from designers John Bartlett and Stella McCartney, musician Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, and artist Peter Max.
A fur coat is not worth the suffering that animals endure when raised in fur factories or caught in steel traps. It is time that fur in fashion went the way of the crop-top and the hair scrunchie: extinct.
