Venture capital-focused social network TheFunded founder Adeo Ressi is launching TheFunded Founder Institute.

Over the last few months, I've been writing about startup incubators and wondering how elements of the Y-Combinator type model could find its way into the social enterprise space.

According to this TechCrunch post, TheFunded Founder Institute will be a little bit different in a few ways:

  • Unlike Y-Combinator, it won't necessarily take a stake in the companies of the founders they bring to the institute. They will have rights to make investments early on, however.
  • The focus will be on first time entrepreneurs, particularly those that come from unique perspectives or backgrounds.

It seems interesting to me. I really like the approach that prioritizes the people themselves versus just investing directly in the project. It reminds me of the approach All Day Buffet wants to take that I mentioned in this post "Investing in People Over Ideas."

I also love the fact that Ressi is interested in digging into "unproven" (at least in terms of business) circles. The "risk" factor in venture capital seems pretty broken to me and this is one approach to giving it a bit of a jolt. I'll be keeping an eye on this one for sure.
