Tournament of Pandemics Update 1

by Alanna Shaikh · 2009-03-12 04:48:00 UTC

So far we've seen two match-ups in the tournament of pandemics. Ebola defeated encephalitis, as infectious disease historian Lisa Walker determined that the best days for encephalitis were in the past. I just couldn't get excited about leptospirosis, and it was badly outmatched by its opponent, influenza.

That means we've got our first round two pairing - Ebola vs. Influenza. They're both terrifying viruses, so it should be an interesting match.

We've got six remaining first round pairings, including the hotly contested smallpox vs schistosomiasis, which will be examined by Josh Nesbit of JOPSA and Isaac Holeman's take on tuberculosis vs chikungunia.

If you want the brackets as a pdf file, you can download them here. The prize competition is closed, but feel free to keep offering your thoughts on the pairings in the comments.
