Trafficking Highlights from 2009 Clinton Global Initiative

All this week, the 2009 meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative has been meeting to discuss some of the most significant and challenging problems facing the world. One of the focuses has been the empowerment of women and girls, and with those discussions has come a lot of activity around the issue of human trafficking. You can watch the whole thing via live webcast here. Or, you can read a few highlights from the trafficking discussions:
- Anti-trafficking activist Ruchira Gupta received the 2009 Clinton Global Citizen Award in honor of her extraordinary work helping women and girls who are survivors of slavery help themselves.
- Yesterday featured a working session on human trafficking with Julia Ormond, Ricky Martin, and other leaders in the anti-trafficking movement on
- The partnership between The Body Shop and ECPAT which developed the Soft Hands, Kinds Hearts lotion that benefits victims of child sex trafficking was announced today.
- Polaris Project was recognized for their work in fighting slavery.
- Today's opening session on women focused on both human trafficking and HIV/AIDS
- The Clinton Global Initiative hosted a press conference on human trafficking at which Hilda Solis, Melanne Verveer, Mira Sorvino, Julia Ormond, Kevin Bales and other were present.
It's good to know that Bill Clinton doesn't have to save the world all by himself, one journalist at a time. In fact, he has a large team of supporters and activists fighting human trafficking alongside him. I am particularly excited for Ruchira Gupta, who has been working for over 20 years to fight trafficking, despite threats on her life. Anyone lucky enough to be at #GCI09?
