Uri Avnery on Israel as an Ethnic State

Avnery remains one of the most insightful observers of Israeli politics. In his latest column, he shines a spotlight on Tzipi Livni, who stands a fair change of becoming Israel's next Prime Minister.

Israel, she said, is a Jewish and democratic state. The Arab citizens enjoy full civil rights. But they must know that this is the Jewish nation-state, while they belong to another nation, and their nation-state will be the putative Palestinian state.

This view isn't rare in Israel - far from it. But it's helpful to take a look at this kind of statement, translate it into English, and ponder it for a moment. How would Americans feel about the United States as a white, anglo-saxon, protestant country?

Everybody understands that the future and robustness of the US-American nation do not depend on the religion and race of the American people. Therefore, there is no “demographic problem” in America. Neurotic demographers like our Arnon Sofer would be considered cranks over there.

Absolutely. Can someone explain to supporters of Israel that some American ideas are worth exporting? I recommend: A constitution, separation of synagogue and state, and equal rights for all regardless of religion and ethnicity.
