Viva La Prensa Libre!
Is there hope for Iran? Well, at least for today with the announcement of the long sought after release of Roxana Saberi from Iranian prison. As reported by the New York Times, Saberi was tried and sentenced to eight years in prison in April on charges of spying. She was released Monday after an appeals court reduced the sentence. Iran has detained several Western journalists in recent years, though in most cases they have been expelled rather than tried. Ms. Saberi, however, is a dual citizen of Iran and the United States.
I've written about Saberi here before and it is certainly a joyous occassion to see that she has been freed from prison. However, there are still other journalists held captive by the Iranian government. I only hope that step by step and day by day we can work to keep the press free from incarceration because I truly believe that information is the key to a free and democratic society.
