The 35th G8 Summit is set to take place in July in Maddalena, Italy. At every summit, the host country sets the agenda for the meeting and this year important topics to be discussed range from poverty to climate change to the global financial crisis.

In the Fair Trade movement this year, there is an immense amount of energy behind World Fair Trade Organization and strengthening the movement to address its role in finding a solutions to these lingering problems. A major goal behind the BIG BANG and World Fair Trade Day is to address the current crises at the G8 summit.

BIG BANG!! is also the antidote to the World Trade Organization’s failure to beat trade injustice and social and environmental degradation; the G8’s failure to beat climate change or the globalized business issues that ravage the planet; and the failure of the financial system to provide a sustainable economy -  leaving millions of people without the means to buy food, homes, health care or education.

So, in preparation for the G8 Summit, the World Fair Trade Organization is sending an agent of change from the Fair Trade movement, known as the G9. This agent of change will deliver the Fair Trade movement's solution to poverty, climate change and the economic crisis. Since the Fair Trade movement is all about a democratic process, the selection of this Fair Trade agent is up to your vote. Check out the World Fair Trade Day site and see who is up for a vote in the G9 Elections. You can also nominate in a new candidate if you have someone else you have in mind. Democracy in action.
