What Gay and Lesbian Parents Are Naming Their Children

Each year, the Social Security Administration (SSA) releases the most popular baby names from the previous year.  There's Isabella and Jacob, Michael (woohoo!) and Olivia, Jayden and Emma, and the list goes on and on. But has anyone ever compiled a list of what gay and lesbian parents are naming their children?

They have now. Take a look at Goodkin, which just released their top lists of Gayby Boomer names. A gayby, if you haven't heard the term before, is a child of LGBT parents. A gayby boomer, to take it a step further, is another vocabulary word for an LGBT parent. Gayby = kids. Gayby boomers = gay parents.

Now that the vernacular is out of the way, what are gay and lesbian parents naming their children these days?

Well, as Jen Gruskoff notes, the findings aren't entirely scientific. "Until the census correctly tracks and acknowledges families that are headed up by same sex families, we will never actually have an accurate list," Gruskoff writes. "Our list was put together by contacting and cross referencing hundreds of names of gay people we know or have heard about who have kids."

So what are the top names? Well, for those who want to name their children either Noah or Vivienne, you're in luck ...

Goodkin breaks it down. Here I'll list the top five girls and boys names, but if you want to see their entire list, head on over to their site and show them some loving.

Girls:

(1) Vivienne, (2) Charlotte, (3) Billie, (4) Noa, and (5) Harper (here's wondering if Harper stems from To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, which just celebrated a landmark anniversary not too long ago.)

Boys:

(1) Noah, (2) Charlie, (3) Atticus [editor's note: To Kill a Mockingbird strikes again?], (4) Milo, and (5) Dashiel.

Agree/disagree? Sound off in the comments. And do check out the remaining five names over at Goodkin.
